ACT 29 E-NEWSLETTER
Volume 2, Issue 9                   March 4, 2009

St. Luke’s The name “St. Luke’s” was chosen as our name in 1984 because Saint Luke was the only Gentile writer of the Bible.  He was a physician and patron saint of healing.  St. Luke’s Gospel is the Gospel of women, gentiles, prodigals, and Samaritans.
Act 29 Newsletter -  Saint Luke also wrote the book of Acts, and it’s the New Testament book that records the history of the birth and growth of the church.  The Book of Acts ends rather abruptly in the 28th chapter, but the history and growth of the church continues.  Our e-newsletter strives to tell that continuing story of church growth and so the name Act 29 was chosen.  St. Luke’s Community Church might be considered the 29th act in the drama of God’s redemption.
-Reprinted from Act 29 Newsletter November 1985-

What’s in the Bible
And
Why Should I Care?

Beginning Wednesday evening, March 4, our new Bible Study Series, "What's in the Bible and Why Should I Care?", will be an 8-month series about the Bible and what we find in it as the Word of God.  It will be an exciting journey as we discover just what the Bible does tell us to help us along life’s road.  This will be an interactive participatory study, and study guides will be given to all participants. Each study is a 4-week series.

During March Rev. Dr. Jack Inman will lead us in a study of “What’s in the Bible About God?”   The following studies will be –

“An Expanded View of God”
“What’s in the Bible About Jesus?”
“What’s in the Bible About the Holy Spirit?”
“What’s in the Bible About Church?”
“What’s in the Bible About Us?”
“What’s in the Bible About Life Together?"
Join us for our Wednesday evening dinners at 5:30 p.m. followed by Bible Study at 7:00 p.m.

SPRING FORWARD
It’s that time again! Time to change your clocks and “Spring Forward.”  Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend.  Be sure to set your clock forward one hour before going to bed Saturday evening or you will get to church an hour late!

LENT

Many traditions have celebrated Lent as a time to “sacrifice” something you truly enjoy such as sweets, etc., no meats on Friday, etc., to remind us of the sacrifice Christ gave with His life for our salvation.  This year we are being challenged to not sacrifice such things, but to sacrifice “time” by finding some special area of need in the world and donating your time to ministry in the Name of Christ.  Let Lent be a time of honoring Christ through service, not a time of feeling “forced to give up” sweets, etc.  Christ never redeemed any of us to sit around waiting for His return!
On Sunday, February 22, Lenten Offering Cards were distributed in our morning Worship Service.  The cards are designed with slots to hold quarters, enough slots to hold $10.  We then bring those filled cards to the church and place them in the offering as a special Lenten Offering. This year’s Lenten Offering will be used to complete renovation of the dais in the sanctuary.

Our 2009 Church Theme
James 1:22, “..be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…” teaches us we are to be more than “pew-warmers.”

Harvey or Jerry Gardner or call the church office.  You do not have to have special building skills to assist with the building of a Habijax home.

FLORAL CONTRIBUTIONS

Park Avenue Florist and Gift Shop, 347 Blanding Avenue, in Orange Park, has graciously begun to donate 2 arrangements of flowers for the altar every Sunday.  Please let them know you appreciate their contribution to our worship experience each week.
We recommend, should you wish to place flowers in the church for any event, you contact either Robert Wheeler at American Beauty Florist, 2712 Park Street, Jacksonville (388-0094) or Joyce at Park Avenue Florist as listed above.

Projector Replaced

For several weeks it has been obvious that the projector used in our services is “dying.”  It has been in operation for a longer period of time than normal for such media equipment.  After finally reaching the stage of projections being almost impossible to read clearly, we have purchased a new projector.
An anonymous donor has challenged each of us to step forward and donate $20 to match their donation to defray the cost of the new projector.  Write the word “projector” on your offering envelope or on your check and place your contribution in the offering plate. We have raised about 50% of the cost of the new projector.

The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS
Balm in Gilead – March 1st -7th

It has been my privilege for the past 5 years, as a member of the InterFaith-Based Advisory Group, to be an active participant in the annual Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS.  I am the only white minister/pastor in the Jacksonville area who participates in the Advisory Group or the Week of Prayer.  We were not given the schedule until it was too late to publish in last week’s ACT 29.  I encourage you to attend the Friday Prayer Breakfast at Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church, a church with a wonderful spirit and a church where I was privileged to preach on Human Relations Sunday 2008. – Rev. Take a Sista to Get Tested!

March 10, 2009

Whether it’s your sister, your cousin, your mother, daughter, or best friend, show that special woman in your life that you care. Take her to get an HIV test! This campaign is part of the Sistas Organizing to Survive (S.O.S.) mobilization initiative. In observance of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the S.O.S. Advisory Group is launching a new campaign to increase HIV testing among Florida’s black women. Knowing one’s HIV status is the critical first step to helping black women protect themselves and their families from HIV. “Take a Sista to Get Tested” is designed to encourage black women to take charge of their health by taking care of themselves and their loved ones.

JUDAS – THE BETRAYER
Portrayed by Rev. Lee Weaver
Pastor, Evangelist
Veteran of Dramatic and Musical Theater
Radio and Television Personality

It is Good Friday morning. From out of the shadows a figure emerges. He appears restless, even frightened. He's startled to see that you are looking at him. He explains that he did not sleep last night, and as he dresses, he tells you that he is preparing to go and find the priests -- to see what he can do now.
His name is Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve. He explains to you what happened last night in Gethsemane, how he kissed Jesus in order to "identify" him. Wistfully, he recounts the miracles, the things he saw with his own eyes; he explains his frustration and his decision to betray. With anguish he details the Last Supper and the events leading to the crucifixion.
And he makes you think. You might reconsider your feelings about him. You might even identify with him. But before he runs off -- this complicated man, this tortured soul -- you will be moved.

CHILDREN’S CHURCH

Ms. Monique Baker, our Children’s Ministry Leader, directs our Children’s Church where our children have a grand time with Bible studies, videos, crafts and games designed to teach about God and the love of Christ.
They meet every Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.  Two adults are present with the children at all times.
Parents should bring their children to the Children’s Room located on first floor of the Educational Building (through the front gate and into the courtyard) and sign them in before going to the Worship Service.
We need more adults on the Children’s Ministry Team.  If you can take a Sunday to help out with the children please let Monique know.  We still need Children’s Bible Story DVD’s for this ministry, like “Veggie Tales” that are available at Walmart.
Keep watching ACT 29 and announcements in services for special events being planned for our children.

“Reflection” from Rev. Harvey

FEAR CAN BE A GOOD THING

The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. -- Psalm 19:9
Patty always laughed whenever anyone tried to tell her that what she did was sinful. She would mock her friends, telling them they sounded like old ladies. Gwen couldn't understand how Patty could do the things she did and still call herself a Christian. Gwen was surprised to see Patty standing at her door in tears.
Patty had begun to wake up to the fact that she really was living a wrong lifestyle. The more she thought about it, the worse she felt. She hoped that Gwen could help her. Gwen told her that she was already on the right track to finding help. Realizing that what you do is wrong is the first step. Fearing what might happen because of what you do is the next step. Fear can be a healthy thing for us when it forces us to clean up our lives and walk the straight path. Once on the right path, we can leave fear behind, for nothing can harm us once we are in the Lord's camp. God's judgments are righteous and true, and He will always help us make the changes that allow us to clean up our lives, if we will only ask Him to.
Prayer:
I need to respect You more, Lord. I need to be reminded that Your way is the only way, so that I won't be so tempted to stray. Be with me to guide me. Amen.
