New Members Class on November 1
Several people have been asking about the next New Members Class. The date for the new class has been set for Saturday, Nov. 1 at Noon. See Stephen Jones or Rev. Harvey to sign up or to get more information. You may attend the class if you've like more information about St. Luke's. You are not required to join if you attend the class, but you must attend the class to join the church.
By-Laws Team Formed
We have volunteers for a By-laws Team in place to look at possible ammendments to our by-laws. The team will consist of 2 Board members, 2 St. Luke's members at large(not on the Board), and Rev. Harvey. The team is as follows: Stephen Jones, Bil Detore, Robbie Roberts, Nancy Bernal, & Rev. Harvey Carr. The team will be meeting to have amendments to present to the Board before the 30 day deadline prior to the Congregational Meeting.
ANY St. Luke's member may also submit a by-law amendment or change by following the procedures in our by-laws under the 'Amendment' section. They must be submitted in writing to the Board at least 30 days before the Congregational Meeting and include the rationale.
We follow our by-laws because they are put in place by St. Luke's members at our congregational meeting. Our by-laws are the voice of the people and can only be changed by a vote of the congregation.

DEVOTIONAL- Dying To Self
"I die every day."- 1 Corinthians 15:31
Did you know you speak over nine million words a year, and more than half of them are I...me...my...and mine? So God's response calls for dying to self. Paul said: "I die (to self) every day." But for many of us, "Behold I live for evermore." is more in keeping with how we conduct our lives! The Bible says as followers of Jesus, "Everything connected with getting our own way...is killed off for good." (Gal 5:24). But self-interest won't just roll over and die, it must be "killed off for good." It's a constant battle because we've a tendency to cling to our own interests with a death grip. Jesus told his disciples, "Whoever desires to be first...let him be your slave.(Mt 20:27). A slave was the lowest servant on the totem pole. Seasoned followers of Christ are called to higher levels of selflessness than beginners. And when you aspire to lead others, God raises that bar even higher! Many times God will leave you with a permanent reminder of how God managed to get through to you in an area where you were stubborn. "Moses was...a powerful speaker" (Ac 7:22), but after he hit 'the big 40' and decided to do his own thing, an encounter with God left him with a stutter. A limp became Jacob's trademark. Even the Apostle Paul "was given...a handicap to keep him in...touch with his limitations" (2Co 12:7). What's your handicap? The habit you battle or the fear that never leaves? "Why doesn't God just take it away?" you ask. Because anything that keeps you dependant on God is a plus, not a minus.

GOD IS LOVE. Whoever lives in love lives in GOD, and GOD in them.
There is no fear in love. But perfect love casts out all fear.

What's in a name?
St. Luke's- The name "St. Luke's" was chosen as our name in 1984 because Saint Luke was the only Gentile writer of the Bible. He was a physician and patron saint of healing. St. Luke's Gospel is the Gospel of women, gentiles, prodigals, and Samaritions.
Act 29 newsletter- Saint Luke also wrote the book of Acts, and it's the New Testament book that records the history of the birth and growth of the church. The book of Acts ends rather abruptly in the 28th chapter, but the history and growth of the church continues. Our e-newsletter strives to tell that continuing story of church growth and so the name Act 29 was chosen. St. Luke's Community Church might be considered the 29th act in the drama of God's redemption. -Reprinted from Act 29 Newsletter, November, 1985.
