New Members Class on November 1

Several people have been asking about the next New Members Class. The date for the new class has been set for Saturday, Nov. 1 at Noon. See Stephen Jones or Rev. Harvey to sign up or to get more information. You may attend the class if you've like more information about St. Luke's. You are not required to join if you attend the class, but you must attend the class to join the church.

All Invited To Join Next By-Laws Team Meeting

We have volunteers for a By-laws Team in place to look at possible ammendments to our by-laws. The team will consist of 2 Board members, 2 St. Luke's members at large(not on the Board), and Rev. Harvey. The team is as follows: Stephen Jones, Bil Detore, Robbie Roberts, Nancy Bernal, & Rev. Harvey Carr. The next team meeting will be Thursday, October 16 at 6:00pm upstairs in the conference room. The team is working to have amendments to present to the Board before the 30 day deadline prior to the Congregational Meeting.
ANY St. Luke's member may also join the team at this meeting or submit a by-law amendment or change by following the procedures in our by-laws under the 'Amendment' section. They must be submitted in writing to the Board at least 30 days before the Congregational Meeting and include the rationale. The discussion from members present and the Board at this month's Board meeting centered on combining everything submitted into one new proposed set of by-laws to be voted on at our congregational meeting since we have quite a number of changes.
We follow our by-laws because they are put in place by St. Luke's members at our congregational meeting. Our by-laws are the voice of the people and can only be changed by a vote of the congregation.

World AIDS Luncheon

You are invited to attend the 7th Annual Community Awards Luncheon on Monday, December 1. This luncheon is held each year during the World AIDS Week activities in Jacksonville. Princess Kasune Zulu of Zambia will be the keynote speaker. It will be held downtown at the Wyndham Jacksonville Riverwalk. Ticket prices are $30 per individual or $300 for a table of 10. Call the church office or see Rev. Harvey so everyone from St. Luke's can sit together and possibly reserve a full table. FYI- Next year's World AIDS Service will be held at St. Luke's in December 2009.

The Quilt Project Moves To St. Luke's

The Quilt Project's NE Florida Chapter is relocating to St. Luke's! The local chapter stores and cares for a certain number of panels which are part of the AIDS Quilt Project. Their new home is in one of the offices upstairs. Call the church office if you like to sew and would like to volunteer for this organization.

DEVOTIONAL- Cast Your Cares On God

"For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."- Matthew 11:30

Faith is trusting that God will settle the accounts with those who have been unjust and unfair with you. The psalmist David wrote: "Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; God will never let the righteous fall" (Psalm 55:22). No one travels the road of life without being affected by injustice at one time or another.
But the worst thing that can happen to you is to develop victimitis.
Victimitis is carrying your grudge and nursing the hurts. This produces a whole new batch of emotional demons to torment your soul. Resentment, anger, self-pity, and even vengeance become a mixed-up recipe for messed-up feelings.
If you walk the walk of faith, there will be times when you'll be treated unfairly. At such times, you can be assured that God can handle the injustice a lot better than you can. You have the faith that God will settle the score in a way that will be helpful and not hurtful to everyone concerned. So don't carry the grudge; bury it. You can be positive about one thing. God knows the ins and outs of the entire upsetting situation a lot better than you do. God knows how to pull weeds without killing the flowers! God understands your opponents, adversaries, and enemies a lot better than you do. God knows how to turn an enemy into a friend, too!
Let God take over whatever problem you face before it does untold damage to your spirit.

Dear God, with Your help, I promise to drop all resentments, all injustices, into the deepest sea of Your power and mercy and love. I trust You to settle the matter in the best way!

GOD IS LOVE. Whoever lives in love lives in GOD, and GOD in them.
There is no fear in love. But perfect love casts out all fear.

What's in a name?

St. Luke's- The name "St. Luke's" was chosen as our name in 1984 because Saint Luke was the only Gentile writer of the Bible. He was a physician and patron saint of healing. St. Luke's Gospel is the Gospel of women, gentiles, prodigals, and Samaritions.
Act 29 newsletter- Saint Luke also wrote the book of Acts, and it's the New Testament book that records the history of the birth and growth of the church. The book of Acts ends rather abruptly in the 28th chapter, but the history and growth of the church continues. Our e-newsletter strives to tell that continuing story of church growth and so the name Act 29 was chosen. St. Luke's Community Church might be considered the 29th act in the drama of God's redemption. -Reprinted from Act 29 Newsletter, November, 1985.
