SUNDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2008

We welcome

Joseph - Husband of Mary

JOSEPH – THE HUSBAND OF MARY

as portrayed by

Rev. Lee Weaver

United Methodist Pastor/Evangelist/Veteran of Dramatic and Musical Theater

Radio and Television Personality

He is hunched, a man in his autumn years.  As he approaches, you can see that he has some difficulty moving.  He does not appear to be a wealthy man, but something in his eyes tells you that he is pleased with his lot.

His name is Joseph – and he is a very proud father.  He speaks lovingly of how he met Mary and how he knew “She was the one.”  With great joy he recalls their trip to Jerusalem when Jesus was twelve.  Awed, he explains how he discovered that his own boy was “born to set our people free.”

With Joseph you’ll go to Jerusalem, to Egypt and to the Bethlehem stable, joining the angels, the shepherds and the Wise Ones for the very first Christmas.

A love offering will be taken for Rev. Weaver during the service.

“Reflection” from Rev. Harvey

The Gift of Encouragement

"Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace." – 2 Corinthians 13:11 (NLT)

Often we read the names of characters in Scripture one time and then never hear from them again. One of these names is Barnabas.

Barnabas means "son of encouragement." We are introduced to him in the Book of Acts, first as a supporter of the church (Acts 4:36-37) and later as a defender of the newly converted Paul (9:27) after Paul’s reputation hindered his acceptance by the apostles.

When Barnabas was finished with this task, the Jerusalem church desperately needed someone to take control of the young church in Antioch, Syria. They were looking for someone strong, steady, and firm who could be an encouragement to build up the people in their newfound faith.

The church in Antioch was surrounded with all sorts of mystery religions. It was easy for the new Christians to be persuaded to let false doctrines infiltrate the church. So the Jerusalem church turned to someone they could count on. Barnabas was active in the leadership of the church in Antioch.

Barnabas may have spent many years there, during which time he may have discipled John Mark, the apostle who wrote the Gospel of Mark, although the Bible does not directly record any of this information. We have to rely on indirect references in the Bible, as well as extra-biblical literature to surmise what Barnabas’s life was like.

But from all that is recorded of him in Scripture, it is evident that Barnabas was one of those people who did not care who got all the credit, as long as he was serving God with his talents, gifts, and abilities.

God can do wonderful things through someone who does not really care who gets the credit. Perhaps God has given you the gift of encouragement. Be that special person of encouragement to someone in your life. First Corinthians 14:12 says to "let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel" with whatever spiritual gift you have. You may not be recognized by everyone, but remember, God sees your good works and He rewards you!

Hope burns bright where a spark of encouragement lights the flame.

Prayer:
Loving Father, how often You have brought someone into my life to encourage me when I lacked faith or confidence. What a gift! Use me to give the gift of encouragement to someone else today.

What’s in a name?

St. Luke’s The name “St. Luke’s” was chosen as our name in 1984 because Saint Luke was the only Gentile writer of the Bible.  He was a physician and patron saint of healing.  St. Luke’s Gospel is the Gospel of women, gentiles, prodigals, and Samaritans.

Act 29 Newsletter -  Saint Luke also wrote the book of Acts, and it’s the New Testament book that records the history of the birth and growth of the church.  The Book of Acts ends rather abruptly in the 28th chapter, but the history and growth of the church continues.  Our e-newsletter strives to tell that continuing story of church growth and so the name Act 29 was chosen.  St. Luke’s Community Church might be considered the 29th act in the drama of God’s redemption.
